Presenter: Andrea Elizabeth Haydon
Design Strategist, RATIO Architects
Why is Service Design important in the architectural practice? So much of the built environment has been created without consideration for how people use a space. It’s my job to observe, listen and imagine spaces that not only meet the needs of our clients but meet the often-unspoken expectations of the people our clients interact with on a daily basis.
As a Service Designer in an architectural practice, it means choosing to take the time to put myself in the mind of the user and consider their journey from start to finish. It’s finding the little ways to make life easier. It’s the act of shaping an experience within a space and seeing it implemented. Understanding the underlying motivations and needs of both the “administrator” and “users” of a space and how the back end is operating, we can more deeply inform the physical design of the space.
Applied Improvisation to Improve Your Design PracticePresenters: Maria Meschi (Design Facilitator, Collabo Creative) & Terri Wada (Design Strategist & President, Collabo Creative)
The power of design lies not in a simple process but rather in the designer’s mind. In this session you’ll learn about the Design Mindset developed by Collabo Creative through over a decade of research in teaching and practice. With the use of applied improvisation, the approach that comedic improvisers use to co-create scenes without a script, we’ll guide you through several exercises that anyone can use to develop their creativity, adaptability and communication skills.
Collabo Design Facilitator and current VCD MFA student, Maria Meschi is a professional improviser with 25 years of experience in live theatre. Terri Wada, Herron alumna and President of Collabo Creative, brings with her over 15 years of experience as a designer and educator. Together this pair will apply the tenets of improvisation to the practice of design in a highly engaging session. Come prepared to try, fail, and have fun.
3:15 – 4:15 p.m. Breakout SessionsBuilding Empathy with ResistorsPresenter: Stephany Stamatis
Lead Design Researcher, DORIS Research
A question that comes up often amongst design facilitators who lead design sessions is, "How do you engage people who aren't into it, and resisting whatever you try?" Instead of framing resistant folks as Negative Neds or Debbie Downers, this session will focus on how to build empathy, and meeting people where they're at. Some are resistant because design tools and people-centered design are way out of their comfort zone, or uses styles of thinking they aren't used to. Others might be projecting their experiences from within a toxic culture onto the engagement project as a whole. To overcome some of these reasons for resistance (and others!), the session will teach you facilitation skills, tools, and methods to use with people who are particularly resistant to being engaged.
Put on Your Big Designer PantsPresenter: Amy McAdams-Gonzales

Her work has appeared in the pages of Pattern Magazine, on posters for Harrison Center for the Arts, and on the packaging, storefronts, and advertisements for countless local and national businesses and nonprofits.
