Wilhelmenia Warren, a valued member of the Campus Facilities team that provides IUPUI service to more than 60 buildings and 300 acres of space, helps to create an inviting and welcoming campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This beautiful campus we can all call home, with plentiful landscaped greenspaces, state-of-the art buildings, and clean facilities at each and every turn, is due in part to Warren's hard work and dedication.
Warren, who joined the Custodial Services staff in 2015, takes pride in the work that she does to keep the fourth and fifth floors of University Hall neat and tidy. But for her, it's also about the people she interacts with during her second shift.
"I am a people person who enjoys meeting and greeting people each day, and the people here are friendly and very open-hearted. I love encouraging others and to see people smile brightens my day," she said.
The feeling is quite mutual. Warren's infectious smile and friendly nature have a positive impact on all those she comes in contact with.
"It's always a pleasure to see Wilhelmenia at the end of the day; she consistently greets me with a smile. Her hard work and attention to detail make our work environment much more pleasant and stress free. She is thorough and conscientious, and it's obvious that she takes pride in her work. She has really become a trusted member of our family," said Shirley Yorger, Senior Administrative Secretary in the Office of Planning and Institutional Improvement.
Prior to joining IUPUI, she worked in building services at The Indianapolis Star for 27 years. In the late 1980s, before starting her career at the Star, Warren worked on campus at what was then University Place Hotel and Conference Center. A native of Indianapolis, she grew up spending her free time on Indiana Avenue, or "the Avenue" as it was commonly referred to at the time, and visiting the businesses that lined the popular corridor.
